Load of Balls

 While wandering the back streets of Tokyo recently I came across a shop selling -- ah, but that would be telling... Well, anyway in the shop window was this interesting display.

They're a carefully-made set of test gauges, each one accurate to +/-0.005mm diameter. But for what purpose? It took me a few seconds to figure out but of course I had more clues such as other tools and items in the shop window. Can you guess what rather specialised and Japanocentric purpose these gauges are intended for? Answers below.
